I've been working on a new PHP / mySQL driven site over the last few days, it will supersede this space toward the end of February. From a technical perspective, I find that the ability to customize templates and design layout to be extremely limited when publishing content using 'Blogger', so I have decided to build a journal from scratch which allows for advanced features such as a "Search" function, and the ability to categorize content (i.e. Photos). The captioned photo shows the new build thus far, I have Apache webserver and a small SQL database running locally, and it is very stable and flexible.
Minor tooth-brandishing aside I've been thinking/heading towards the same. It takes me hours per post to get what I'm looking for in Blogger. Always setting the curve, eh?
I'm actually surprised that I stuck with it as long as I did. In my first post back in November 2005, I expressed my reservations about using 'Blogger', but it allowed me to get a page up and running with little issue. Using PHP and CSS really allows for some creative designs; shame that the screenshot does not reflect the new layout, but I am pleased with how it looks. Should be online by March.
I actually would rather be fishing, but all of our rivers are frozen, and Steelheading in anything less than - 5C is not my cup of tea anyway.
Might be a death sentence but we'll be on the river first light beneath a dam tomorrow.
I really need to switch over too. I have the domain name and space so it's just a matter of...what? Are you programming from the ground up or using some kind of builder/interface of sorts?
I personally wouldn't fish tomorrow, but we each have our own motivations. I haven't been out since New Year's Eve, but I have waited this long, I will choose to wait for a warming trend that would usher fresh fish to migrate. A lot of those stocked Lake Ontario 'Chambers Creek' strain Rainbows will be getting really dark now...
Regarding the new site, I worked as a Database Programmer Analyst for 6 years, so I will be doing 80% of it, and the rest will be hosted.
Good luck if you choose that route, there are plenty of good resources out on the internet.
Regarding previous content, I deliberately will not be carrying over previous entries, though I could easily write an import routine that would allow me to. At best, some of my better "River Reports" from Nov / December will be carried over, and the rest will archive.
J,

I think I got to see some of the new site. I like the photo slide show. Takes a little while on the images, but it looks really good.
ReplyDeletePS: Thanks for the advice on the super-point-n-click. I might need to rethink what i was looking for.
